Once again paddlers turned up in great numbers to challenge themselves at the Gregory River Race. 113 paddlers and most crossed the line under the cutoff time. There were lots of beginners and people who had never been to the Gregory before.
The battle was on from the start between 2 North West Canoe Club paddlers Steve Jenje and newcomer Alan Cross. Whilst Alan Cross was blitzing the pre-Gregory races at Lake Moondarra, Mount Isa, Steve Jenje has paddled the Gregory River Canoe Marathon for 33 years and his experience shone through when he crossed the finish line in first position. In third position was one of our regular Sunshine Coast paddlers, Geoff Pearce.
The friendly camaraderie of all paddlers doing the race resulted in a lot of sledging and in the Canadian Challenge Team event we even saw some sabotaging with Team Floorworx installing rocks in the boat of their rival Up Shit Creek. This team was the Flushest Crew in Town and even had a toilet seat in the middle of the boat.
Thanks to Alison Whitehead for the report and photos.
